Will Open Skies Really Benefit Africa?

“SAATM will lead to the supremacy of African skies by a few, already dominant African airlines. Few airlines are going to dominate and that is not good. I would prefer that African countries form regional airlines first before liberalising their skies.” - Yoweri Musevini, Ugandan President

WTM Africa 2020 will see the introduction of an LGBTQ+ travel event named EQUAL Africa in partnership with IGLTA. EQUAL Africa stands for EQUAL Love, Rights, Experiences & Opportunities and will be a bolt-on, full-day conference at #WTMA20, taking place on 6 April.

IGLTA is the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association which works to advance LGBTQ+ travel globally by providing information and resources for LGBTQ+ travellers and demonstrating the significant social and economic impact of LGBTQ+ tourism. IGLTA’s membership includes LGBTQ+ welcoming accommodations, destinations, travel advisors, tour operators, events and travel media in 80 countries.
Megan Oberholzer, Portfolio Director: Travel, Tourism & Sports Portfolio for Reed Exhibitions South Africa says that the partnership with IGLTA is another way that WTM Africa continues to track the latest international travel & tourism industry trends. “LGBTQ+ Travel is on the rise globally, and facilitating safe, comfortable travel for LGBTQ+ travellers to Africa’s wonderful destinations is the focus of EQUAL Africa in partnership with IGLTA,” she says.

“IGLTA is pleased to partner with WTM Africa on this initiative to expand support and visibility for LGBTQ+ travel in Africa,” says John Tanzella, IGLTA President/CEO. “Equal Africa is about furthering important conversations about inclusive and accessible travel into Africa for the LGBTQ+ community and opening new avenues for travellers to explore”.

Attendees at EQUAL Africa in partnership with IGLTA can also look forward to other trending topics and content shares from over 150 speakers from around the globe in six different theatres on the #WTMA20 show floor.
