Cruising is one of the fastest-growing tourism sectors, boasting approximately 31.5 million cruisers in 2023 globally, which is forecasted to grow to around 39.5 million by 2027, according to the State of the Cruise Industry report by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). CLIA also details how the industry is rebounding faster than international tourism arrivals post-pandemic.
It’s good news locally, too. A recent study showed Cape Town had its best cruise season ever in 2022/2023, welcoming 70 vessels and 145,000 passengers, double the numbers from the 2016-2019 season.
For those who’ve yet to hop aboard for the holiday of a lifetime, it begs the question – what am I missing out on? If you’re experiencing Fear Of Missing Out – FOMO (who can blame you?), here’s a general overview of what to expect on your first cruise – some of these experiences may surprise you.
Since its inception, cruising has shattered the notion that one size fits all. Cruise liners cater to everyone, whether you’re planning a multigenerational family trip, a getaway with your close circle of friends, a romantic couple’s escape, or a solo adventure.
Food Galore:
Cruises are a must for foodies. There’s so much more to the onboard food scene than a hearty buffet. Think everything from Asian fusion creations and Mediterranean cuisine to moreish spreads and gourmet dinners. There are even foodie and wine-pairing-themed cruises to consider if you’re hungry for even more palatable experiences.
Entertainment Aplenty:
Expect state-of-the-art theatres showcasing Broadway-esque productions, nightclubs, live music, and more. There’s never a dull moment on a cruise ship!
Additionally, the convenience cruising offers is unparalleled. Imagine hopping between vibrant destinations without the hassle of multiple check-ins or repeatedly packing and unpacking. You’ll enjoy the perks of one-time accommodation arrangements, and your luggage travels with you!
Smart Spending
One significant advantage of cruising is the comprehensive pricing.
“Your one-time payment typically includes your accommodation, complimentary dining, select beverages, and a wide array of activities. While shore excursions and certain amenities might cost extra, this structure makes it easy to budget your holiday and avoid unexpected expenses,” comments Antoinette Turner, GM of Flight Centre South Africa.
Furthermore, you can experience multiple destinations for a fraction of the cost compared to traditional land-based vacations. Visit idyllic islands, bustling cities, and hidden gems all in one trip.
Growing Popularity and Satisfaction
As per the CLIA, a staggering 85% of travellers who’ve cruised expressed immense satisfaction, with intentions to cruise again. This figure is 6% higher than pre-pandemic stats, emphasising the continuous improvements and diversifications in the cruising world. Moreover, younger generations are leaning into this travel mode, with 88% of Millennials and 86% of Gen-X cruise-goers keen on repeating the experience.
Busting Common Cruising Myths
Now you know what to expect, it’s time to dive deeper into what not to expect:
I’ll get seasick: Today’s cruise ships are marvels of engineering. Equipped with advanced stabilisers, they ensure minimal motion, drastically reducing the chances of seasickness. Plus, onboard medical facilities are always ready to assist if ever you feel unwell.
Cruise ships are crowded and uncomfortable: Modern liners are spacious, with various relaxation zones and amenities ensuring everyone can find their own comfy nook. Cabins are also surprisingly spacious.
I’ll gain weight on a cruise: With abundant healthy dining options and state-of-the-art fitness centres on board, you can easily maintain your fitness regimen while enjoying the various culinary delights on offer. Plus, with the average cruise ship boasting around 15 decks, it’s really easy to get your steps in as you explore.
Cruises are for an older crowd: As mentioned, younger generations are tuning in to the many cruising benefits. CLIA’s recent stats affirm that 77% of Millennials and 73% of Gen-X non-cruisers are considering a cruise vacation in the near future.
I’ll be bored at sea: Ships are like floating luxury hotels. There’s endless entertainment on board, including go-karts, laser tag, multi-storey aqua parks, and casinos. NCL even offers the exhilarating Plank experience – allowing guests to walk almost 2.5 m above the ocean on transparent flooring.
Cruise itineraries are too rigid: Numerous flexible shore excursions and optional onboard activities let you tailor your days as you desire. NCL is famous for its Freestyle Cruising concept, where cruisers decide what they want to do when they want to do it, including setting their own mealtimes (yes, you can eat breakfast at 3 pm or go bowling first thing in the morning!)
I’ll be isolated from local culture: Cruises often dock at multiple ports, granting ample opportunities to delve deeper into local cultures and experiences.
With such versatility, convenience, and cost-effectiveness, cruising offers a unique holiday experience. While a bucket list cruise experience, such as an Alaskan cruise, promises an escape that dreams are made of, various international cruise lines, including NCL’s Norwegian Dawn, are gracing local shorelines in 2024 and 2025 if your pocket demands cruising closer to home.
Africans, it’s time to set sail. Hop aboard and discover the joys of cruising for yourself.
