His Holiness Pope Francis to Visit Mauritius in September

His Holiness Pope Francis is visiting the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius on Monday, 09 September, as part of a Southern Africa trip that also includes stops in Mozambique and Madagascar. The only previous time Mauritius was blessed with a visit by the Pope was the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1989.

Pope Francis will celebrate a mass at noon at the open-air Marie Reine de la Paix (Monument to Mary, Queen of Peace) church and shrine, situated on the hillside of Signal Mountain. Its position on the outskirts of the capital, Port Louis, offers wonderful panoramic views across the city. During the afternoon, he will also attend a private gathering with other Mauritian priests at the Pere Laval Shrine in Sainte Croix.

Pope Francis travels to Mauritius as a pilgrim of peace, while his visits to the other two nations are as a pilgrim of hope and reconciliation, all themes that are reflected in the official logos of the journey.

A number of special offers and packages have been compiled by Air Mauritius and various tour operators for South Africans wishing to travel to Mauritius for this special commemorative event.
