One Thibault: A Bold Landmark in Cape Town’s Skyline

One Thibault offers hotel-style living for business, conference, corporate and leisure travelers. The central positioning of the building, on Hans Strijdom Avenue, provides stunning views of Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean. Easy access to the vibrant city makes the 260 self-catering apartments an ideal choice for those seeking a comfortable and scenic stay in Cape Town.

“The building played a big part in most Capetonians lives,” say Charlene van Zyl, Director of Sales and Marketing.

The 35-storey concrete tower block building was formerly known as the BP Centre, Standard Bank, Eskom and the LG Buildings.  The building has a distinct look and is of great importance in Cape Town’s postmodern development era, earning it recognition as a heritage site.

Work on the building began in 1969 and was completed just under four years later, in 1972, with its sliding core completed at a rate of six, later four, floors a day. It became known as a renowned commercial skyscraper until 2021 when the conversion to a mixed-use development, including residential units, began.

The skyscraper was the brainchild of architect Revel Fox who passed away in 2004 and is built at a 34-degree diagonal twist. One Thibault is on a north–south axis. This reduces sun loads on the façades of the building, thereby reducing pressure on the air-conditioning system. The mounted pre-cast screen on every floor allows good air flow and cuts off direct sun rays. The façade is made of dark grey stone to resemble the granite found on Table Mountain.

The unique orientation of One Thibault Hotels means none of the apartments stare straight into the façades of the surrounding buildings. This approach preserves the building’s historical significance but also aligns with sustainable development practices and reflects a commitment to both sustainability and the preservation of architectural heritage.

The name Thibault, a word of French origin, carries a strong legacy. It roughly translates to ‘bold or brave people.’ One of the most well-known bearers of the name was Thibault IV of Champagne.

The Choice of One Thibault

One Thibault’s status as a landmark in Cape Town’s skyline offers both the solo and group travellers the ideal option when choosing accommodation in Cape Town. Van Zyl says they take safety and security very seriously.

“We have an easy flow from the parking lot to the foyer and to your apartment,” Van Zyl explains.

At first glance the traveller’s attention will be drawn to One Thibault for its location and unforgettable views. The building is situated near major highways and public transport, is within walking distance of V&A Waterfront, CTICC and close to a My City Bus stop.

Step inside and be pleasantly greeted by an elegant and modern interior, styled to create a welcoming, delightful atmosphere. Combined with the professional and friendly staff, ready to make your stay a memorable one, guests can expect an enhanced stay. With a four-star hotel rating, your choice of staying at the One Thibault Hotel will guarantee a return visit.

A range of elegantly furnished accommodations is on offer at One Thibault Hotel. These include Studios, Deluxe Studios, Premium Studios, and 1-Bedroom Apartments. Short and long-term stay guests can expect spacious accommodation offering comfort and convenience.

Apartments are all equipped with high-speed internet access and comes with a leisure gym, conference facilities and a newly added restaurant component. One Thibault Hotel in Cape Town stands as a testament to modern energy-efficient systems and green building principles, seamlessly blending sustainability with comfort.

With the promise that an entrance point at The Annex will be made available for guests outside the building, visiting The Annex will be accessible to more people.
