Kenya has taken a monumental step towards a sustainable energy future with the inauguration of Lake Turkana Wind Power, Africa’s largest wind farm. Located in a remote region with powerful wind currents, this project promises to be a game-changer for the nation’s energy landscape and its ambitious goal of achieving 100 percent green energy by 2030. Lake Turkana Wind Power boasts a remarkable 365 turbines in northern Kenya, near the shores of Lake Turkana. This remote location is characterized by strong and consistent winds, an ideal spot for harnessing wind energy. The project is set to generate a whopping 310 megawatts, equivalent to powering approximately 330,000 local homes, and contributing around 15 percent of Kenya’s total power supply. Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta hailed this achievement, stating, “Today, we again raised the bar for the continent as we unveil Africa’s single largest wind farm. Kenya is without a doubt on course to be a global leader in renewable energy.” One of the significant advantages of Lake Turkana Wind Power is its potential to lower electricity costs for the nation’s 52 million inhabitants. The wind farm has secured a fixed-price agreement with Kenya Power & Lighting Company Ltd, the country’s largest utility firm, ensuring stable and affordable electricity rates.
