The term “leadership” is currently being used widely in many fields, including business, politics, and religion, globally for developmental purposes. Experts have described it as the ability of an individual or a group of individuals to influence and guide followers or other members of an organization. The concept of leadership requires individuals and groups to demonstrate capability in taking great and usually challenging decisions, creating while charting a clear vision, setting up achievable goals, and availing teams with the knowledge and tools necessary to achieve desired objectives. Often, it is expected for those in the leadership role to further show qualities of self-confidence, strong communication, management skills, creative and innovative thought processes; backed by diligence in the face of failure, willingness to take risks, appreciation of transformational input, wisdom, and responsiveness to crises. In another view, a great leader can be described as one who can make strategic and idealistic decisions such that all those that are supposed to follow can do it effectively to meet set goals. A good leader should be able to direct the process of their vision in addition to motivating. It is against the above that the term has been, for the first time applied to African travel and tourism, where South Africa based African Tourism Partners have in the last few years introduced “leadership awards” for the African tourism industry.
