Recently, Mauritius announced opening up to international travellers, following acceleration of vaccination programme. The move will see borders allowing into the country, both vaccinated and non-vaccinated international travellers, in phases from 15 July 2021 till October when it’s hoped borders will be fully opened. In this exclusive interview, Nomad Africa speaks to Janet de Kretser, SA Representative of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) for more insights into the “resort bubble” and tourist arrival figures. Nomad Africa: How do you feel about Mauritius being one of the few countries currently in the front seat with regards to opening up to international travel? Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA): The vaccination roll-out plan in Mauritius is progressing well, with 40% of the population vaccinated. As such, we are putting initial plans in place to start welcoming international tourists in a two-phased approach: Phase I from 15 July to 30 September, and Phase II from October. Both phases have travel protocols in place, which can be accessed via the MTPA online platforms. As can be expected, the country is being more cautious with the implementation of Phase I. Fully vaccinated tourists can enjoy a 14-days or less (minimum two nights) in-resort vacation and enjoy the hotel facilities on offer at a number of approved resorts. Visitors who have not been fully vaccinated are required to pre-book a 14-night in-room quarantine stay in one of Mauritius’ quarantine hotels.
