“Today, praise be to God, wine was pressed for the first time from Cape grapes.” -Jan van Riebeeck, 2 February 1657 –
When Spookfontein’s first vineyards as first generation winemakers was planted in 1999, the foundation was laid for award-winning wines, a picture-perfect setting, an elevated dining experience, and a relaxed, welcoming ambiance.
Spookfontein is situated in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in the Overberg region of the Western Cape and is surrounded by some of South Africa’s top wine farms — yet this popular establishment continues to make a distinctive mark in the country’s wine industry.
The ghost of Spookfontein:
The farm, originally a diary and cattle farm, received its name in 1853 and developed and blossomed into a celebrated boutique wine farm. Here country living comes with and edge of pizazz and an intriguing story.
The story of Spookfontein, the name ‘Spook’ — Dutch for ‘ghost’ — began with a sense of wonder. It stems from the legend that a spirit reveals itself in the swirling water of the farm’s natural spring fountain. During the winter months a mist often hangs over the water, drifting with the wind, adding to the mystique that surrounds the legend. The artwork on the label of the Spookfontein Little Ghost perfectly portrays the legend.
When the oak trees whisper in harmony with the wandering wind and the darkness falls like a velvet curtain you can almost hear the earth breath beneath you. In the dark cloak of night the shadows blend into the silence and it feels like mystery stirs. At Spookfontein nature painted a perfect picture.
The Spookfontein dynamic:
Guided by the vision of Mike Davis, who bought the farm in 1996, his wife, Amanda, and a dedicated team of hands, they brought to life a wine selection, celebrated restaurant and rustic, farm-style accommodation that echoes the soul of the land. For the Davis couple their shared passion for the wine industry and deep love for the land are what help Spookfontein flourish.
Wine maker Jeanne Pienaar joined the team early in 2025.
The Spookfontein team is a small one, explains General Manager James le Roux. Le Roux has been with Spookfontein for the last nine years and lives on the property. He continues to say that the whole team is able to man all operations on the farm. Le Roux puts emphasis on the fact that every member of the Spookfontein team is dedicated to their craft. Their commitment shows in the end result produced by them.
Hemel-en-Aarde escape:
Picture a long, leisurely lunch paired with a glass of Pinot, framed by a priceless view and followed by a stay that feels as real as the land itself. At Spookfontein, you’re invited to slow down, savour the moment, and enjoy an experience that’s as authentic as it is unforgettable.
Spookfontein invites you to soak in the view with a glass of your favourite Spookfontein cultivar. Savour an exceptional meal, served by professional and friendly staff, topped with an overnight stay, and you will leave with nothing but a good feeling and unforgettable memories.
Tucked between an abundance of trees, rolling vineyards, and the Overberg majestic mountains, the Sunbird and Blue Crane cottages, in true country style décor, offer a serene sanctuary on a wine farm. The two cottages have a rustic charm with modern comforts and each cottage features a fully equipped kitchen. Blending simplicity and convenience, you can be assured of a peaceful, self-catered escape accommodation facility.
The Sunbird Cottage is the grand old dame of the estate. Originally a workers’ home, it was lovingly restored and given a fresh new look to welcome guests. In her footsteps followed the building of the Blue Crane Cottage. Both cottages resemble the same, original, style, feel and look with modern comforts and spacious. They come with two, on-suite bedrooms and a cozy fireplace for the cooler months. The Blue Crane Cottage has a smaller veranda area, but a bigger fireplace area. Ideal for the solo traveler, friends, couples or a small family.
Le Roux did not want to give away too much, but his smile did hint the possibility of more accommodation spaces to follow.
The distinctive architectural design as well as the décor of the tasting room and restaurant was the brainchild of the Ghost Fountain design team. It is as bold as the wine produced on Spookfontein. The guest is welcomed by the captivating building of the tasting room and restaurant. The design is a striking blend of contemporary and natural materials. Curved lines echo the rolling hills of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The panoramic glass walls of the restaurant offers eye-catching views of the vineyards and mountains. An elevated, but yet grounded space was developed in the tasting room and the central skylight floods the space with natural light. Both buildings are in tune with nature and portrays Spookfontein’s philosophy of being in tune with nature in an honest and soulful manner.
