The annual Umhlanga Reed Dance returns from September 2 to 8 at Ludzidzini Royal Residence, drawing thousands of young women from across Eswatini. Visitors, both local and international, can experience more than the festival itself. The kingdom offers a blend of culture, history, and natural beauty that makes a stay unforgettable.

1. Attend the Reed Dance
Experience the heart of Swazi tradition as unmarried young women gather reeds and present them to the Queen Mother. Bright bead-encrusted skirts and coordinated dances create a visual spectacle, symbolising unity, purity, and respect for the monarchy.

2. Witness the royal family
His Majesty King Mswati III attends the main day of the festival. Observing the royal family during the dance provides insight into the kingdom’s living traditions and royal heritage.

3. Explore Lobamba
The political and cultural capital offers museums, historical sites, and lively local markets. Visitors can explore the National Museum, King Sobhuza II Memorial Park, and browse for authentic crafts, artwork, and textiles.

4. Hike in the Ezulwini Valley
Known as the Valley of Heaven, Ezulwini features rolling hills, rivers, and scenic trails. Ideal for hiking, photography, and bird-watching, the valley lets visitors enjoy landscapes that have inspired generations of Swazis.

5. Visit Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary
Home to rhinos, zebras, and antelope, Mlilwane offers walking safaris, cycling routes, and guided tours. It’s perfect for families and nature enthusiasts seeking an intimate encounter with Eswatini’s wildlife.

6. Shop at Swazi markets
Local markets showcase beadwork, woodcraft, baskets, and pottery. Engaging with artisans not only provides unique souvenirs but also supports small businesses across the kingdom.

7. Experience cultural performances
Beyond the Reed Dance, villages host drumming, traditional music, and storytelling sessions. Visitors can witness the oral histories and rituals that have shaped Swazi society for centuries.

8. Stay at luxury resorts or eco-lodges
Ezulwini and surrounding regions offer accommodation for all budgets. From high-end resorts with modern amenities to eco-lodges that immerse guests in community life, booking ahead is recommended during festival season.

9. Taste Swazi cuisine
Sample local dishes such as Sishwala (maize meal), Sidvudvu (pumpkin relish), and traditional stews. Festival stalls and local eateries provide an authentic culinary experience for every visitor.

10. Take guided tours
Guided excursions offer historical context, insight into local culture, and explanations of Eswatini’s landscapes and traditions. Tours are ideal for international tourists who want to fully understand the kingdom’s heritage.
