The prestigious Safari Guide of the Year Awards (SGOTY) has officially named Jason Gipson of Lion Sands Game Reserve as the 2025 Safari Guide of the Year, following an intense multi-day competition held at Kariega Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape.
Under the watchful eye and leadership of FGASA’s Managing Director, Michelle du Plessis, the Safari Guide of the Year (SGOTY) Awards reached its thrilling climax on 21 June, announcing the exceptional guides who have truly mastered the art of connecting guests with the untamed beauty of Southern Africa. The prestigious event, held against the breathtaking backdrop of Kariega Game Reserve, showcased the pinnacle of field guiding, drawing significant attendance from both the guide industry and esteemed guests, all eager to witness the crowning of this year’s champions.
Founded in 2011 by Mike Karantonis and endorsed by the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA), the SGOTY Awards honour the finest in the field guiding profession, highlighting dedication, knowledge, and the ability to connect guests with the natural world in meaningful, memorable ways.
This year’s finalists included five of South Africa’s top field guides:
- Jason Gipson, Lion Sands Game Reserve
- Kalie Otimile, Tswalu Kalahari Reserve
- Cameron Schmidt, Pumba Private Game Reserve
- Matthew Derry, Kwandwe Private Game Reserve
- Megan Heramb-Smith, The Great Outdoors (Freelance)
Finalists were selected through a rigorous nomination and interview process, with eligibility requiring a minimum of five years’ guiding experience, FGASA professional designations, and advanced qualifications. Over four days, each finalist was assessed across eight categories: Game Drive, Guided Bush Walk, Guided Photographic Safari, Bird Slide and Sound Test, Track and Sign, Advanced Rifle Handling, Storytelling, Hospitality and Professionalism.
Gipson impressed across the board, taking first place in Guided Photographic Experience and Hosting, and placing runner-up in Game Drive, Bush Walk, and Track and Sign. Judges praised his calm confidence, guest engagement, and leadership under pressure.
“The most rewarding part of guiding is being the link between guests and the natural world,” says Gipson. “When someone sees a lion or elephant for the first time, it reminds you how lucky we are to do this work.”
With over seven years of experience and training from Bhejane Nature Training, Gipson’s achievement is both a personal triumph and a symbol of excellence in South African ecotourism. He now hopes to inspire and mentor the next generation of guides.

Vibrant Eastern Cape:
Kariega Game Reserve, taking pride of place in the picturesque Kariega River Valley, proved to be an ideal host for the 2025 SGOTY Awards. Its rich history and commitment to conservation provided a fitting environment for the competition. As recently as 33 years ago, the land that now forms the expansive 11,500-hectare reserve was fragmented among 21 different farmers. Through the visionary efforts of Colin Rushmere, who began acquiring land in 1989, and key partnerships, notably with local farmer Tony Fuller in 1998, Kariega transformed into a thriving wildlife sanctuary. This remarkable conservation project led to the re-introduction of iconic species like white rhino, elephants, and lions, ultimately becoming a Big 5 private game reserve. The presence of two major rivers, the Kariega and Bushmans, further enhances its beauty and ecological value, providing exceptional game viewing and birding experiences. The reserve’s commitment to conservation is epitomized by the inspiring story of Thandi, the rhino poaching survivor, and the birth of her four calves, a tale that has captivated the world.
The choice of Kariega as the host venue underscored the deep connection between exceptional guiding and successful conservation. Guests were continually reminded of the profound impact guides have, not only in interpreting the wilderness but also in advocating for its preservation. The seamless blend of the competitive events with the natural splendour of Kariega provided an immersive and unforgettable experience for all.
The Competition:
The five finalists embarked on an intensive series of challenges from June 19 to 22. These challenges were meticulously designed to push their skills to the limit, covering every facet of modern safari guiding:
- Game Drive: Evaluating their ability to immerse guests into nature, locate wildlife, navigate the terrain, provide insightful engagement on animal behaviour and ecology, whilst delivering an outstanding connecting natural experience for the judges and guests.
- Bush Walk: Testing their tracking abilities, knowledge of flora, fauna, and their capacity to lead safe and engaging walks in a dangerous game area.
- Guided Photographic Experience: Assessing their understanding of photography principles in the bush and their ability to guide photographers and assist guests in capturing stunning wildlife images.
- Bird Slide and Sound: A rigorous test of their ornithological knowledge, identifying species from visual cues and distinct calls.
- Track and Sign: Demonstrating their prowess in reading the subtle clues and signs left by animals, birds and insects, interpreting their movements and habits.
- Advanced Rifle Handling: Crucial for safety whilst walking in dangerous game areas, this assessed their proficiency, safety, and responsible use of firearms.
- Storytelling: A cornerstone of great guiding, this challenge highlighted their ability to connect with the audience, weave compelling narratives that bring the bush to life and to deliver a captivating, entertaining and interesting personalized story.
- Hosting and Hospitality: Measuring their interpersonal skills, confidence, communication skills, guest relations, and overall ability to anticipate guests’ needs and create a comfortable and professional experience.
The intensity of the competition was palpable, yet it was matched by a spirit of camaraderie among the finalists. Each guide demonstrated not only their individual brilliance but also a shared passion for their guiding career and a deep respect for the wilderness. Judges, including co-founder Mike Karantonis and FGASA’s Michelle du Plessis, alongside other esteemed industry experts, meticulously evaluated each performance, noting the nuances of their expertise and their genuine connection to nature.
The Guest Itinerary:
Invited guests, comprising industry leaders, media representatives, and passionate safari enthusiasts, were treated to an immersive itinerary that mirrored the very experiences the finalists were being judged on. Their journey began on Monday, June 16, with a seamless transfer with Pembury Transfers from Port Elizabeth International Airport (PLZ) to Kariega Game Reserve. Upon arrival, the tone was set with sundowners and a warm welcome by Howard Rogerson, CEO of Ruggedwear the apparel sponsor, who underscored the significance of the event. The evening culminated in a captivating welcome story by Mark Bishop, Founder and Editor of the Kruger2Canyon Newspaper, followed by insightful storytelling from one of the Safari Guide candidates, offering a glimpse into the talent on display.
The subsequent days, from Tuesday, June 17, to Thursday, June 19, were a blend of exhilarating safari activities and opportunities for deeper engagement. Mornings began early with tea and coffee, followed by invigorating boat safaris on the Kariega River or traditional game drives, providing guests with firsthand experience of Kariega’s abundant wildlife and the expert guiding skills of the reserve’s resident guides. After a hearty breakfast and leisure time, guests had invaluable interview opportunities with the finalists, judges, and FGASA leadership, allowing for deeper insights into the guiding profession and the objectives of the awards. Afternoons offered a rotation of guided walk experiences, further game drives, and guided photographic sessions, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted nature of guiding. Each evening concluded with delicious dinners and further storytelling sessions by the Safari Guide Candidates, leaving guests enthralled by their narratives and knowledge.
The guest experience was meticulously planned to showcase the beauty of Kariega and the excellence of guiding, while also providing a unique opportunity to witness the SGOTY competition unfold. The attendance was robust, with a strong representation from various sectors of the tourism and conservation industries, signifying the importance of the SGOTY awards in the southern African landscape. Lodge owners, tour operators, conservationists, guests, and media flocked to the event, creating a vibrant atmosphere of shared passion and professional discourse. The visible engagement of the guide industry, with numerous guides from other reserves present to support their peers and learn from the best, highlighted the collaborative spirit that defines this community.

The tension and excitement reached a fever pitch on the evening of June 21, as the awards ceremony commenced. The beautifully decorated dining area at Kariega Ukhozi Lodge provided an authentic African setting for the grand announcement. The air buzzed with anticipation as the Master of Ceremonies Cameron Pearce and Sponsor presenters took to the stage.
After heartfelt speeches acknowledging the dedication of all five finalists and the tireless work of the judges and organizing committee, the moment arrived. The winners for each category, representing the specific skill sets vital to exceptional guiding, were announced to rapturous applause:
- Best Game Drive: Kalie Otimile’s natural ability to communicate and connect with nature, combined with his insightful commentary and engaging personality, made his game drive truly memorable. His guests consistently praised his deep knowledge and his knack for creating a thrilling and cultural safari experience.
- Best Bush Walk: Megan Heramb-Smith, Freelance Guide and Partner at The Great Outdoors. The sole female finalist demonstrated quiet confidence and a profound understanding of the intricacies of the bush. Her guests lauded her ability to view rhinos safely and professionally without the animals even being aware of the walking guests and judges at a safe distance. She uncovered hidden gems, from tiny insects to subtle animal tracks, making every step an adventure.
- Best Guided Photographic Experience: Jason Gipson from Lion Sands Game Reserve, demonstrated an exceptional eye for detail and an intuitive understanding of photographic composition in the wild. His ability to position guests for optimal shots and offer valuable technical advice was truly outstanding.
- Best Birding Guide (Bird Slide and Sound): Megan Heramb-Smith won this category. Megan’s encyclopedic knowledge of avian species, both visual and auditory, was unparalleled. Her swift and accurate identification during the challenging bird slide and sound test showcased her interest and mastery of ornithology.
- Best Track and Sign Guide: Matthew Derry of Kwandwe Private Game Reserve. Matt’s tracking skills were truly extraordinary. His ability to interpret faint signs and unravel complex animal movements left judges and observers in awe of his expertise.
- Best Advanced Rifle Handling: Cameron Schmidt from Pumba Private Game Reserve. Cameron’s calm demeanour and precise execution during the advanced rifle handling component demonstrated his unwavering commitment to safety and professionalism in the field.
- Best Storyteller: Kalie Otimile. Kalie’s entertaining storytelling captivated the audience, effortlessly weaving memories with anecdotes, bringing the evening to life with his vivid descriptions and engaging delivery.
- Best Hosting and Hospitality: Jason Gipson. Jason’s genuine warmth, attentiveness, and natural ability to make guests feel truly at home in the bush and around the lodge, set him apart in the professionalism and hospitality category.
