Having grown up in Cape Town, the Garden Route has been a popular holiday destination for my family for many a year. Whether we were spotting whales from the Lookout in Plett, building sandcastles on the beach alongside the castles of Noetzie, or walking the long stretch of white sand in Wilderness, it’s a coastline that holds many memories. And so, when I recently decided to venture out to the Garden Route again, I wanted to break the mold and go somewhere I’d never been before. This is the story of my adventure off the beaten track in the Garden Route: Forests and fynbos at Fancort Known as South Africa’s premier lifestyle resort and holding awards for South Africa’s leading resort and best golf hotel, Fancort isn’t really off the beaten track. But it is ten minutes away from the coast and so had been skipped over by us on previous visits. And while I come from a golfing family, I have not much luck getting out of the bunker. So I wasn’t sure what Fancort could offer me other than a day on the green. But I was stunned and amazed at the quality of the offering here. From the minute I arrived, lush tropical greeny and the smell of wildflowers wafted in the wind, transporting me to some tropical destination.
