Ethiopian Airlines is teaming up with Satarem America Inc. to produce and use a greener type of jet fuel in Ethiopia. The companies signed a deal on Wednesday to make this happen.

Ethiopian Airlines Group has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Satarem America Inc. to collaborate on the production and utilization of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) within Ethiopia. Under this agreement, Satarem will be responsible for producing SAF locally, while Ethiopian Airlines has committed to purchasing the SAF from Satarem. This MoU underscores Ethiopian Airlines Group’s dedication to sustainability and represents a pivotal move towards achieving a greener, more environmentally conscious future.

Through this partnership with Satarem America Inc., a key player in sustainable energy solutions, Ethiopian Airlines Group will integrate SAF into its operations. This initiative will significantly reduce carbon emissions and align with global efforts to tackle climate change. SAF, derived from renewable feedstocks, offers a cleaner alternative to conventional jet fuel, contributing to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Regarding the move, Mr. Mesfin Tasew, Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines Group said, “We are excited to partner with Satarem America Inc in our journey towards a greener and more sustainable future. The adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel is not just a business decision; it reflects our commitment to combating climate change and investing in innovative solutions that support a sustainable industry.”

This collaboration with Satarem America Inc. reinforces Ethiopian Airlines’ role as a leader in embracing eco-friendly aviation practices, highlighting its dedication to upholding superior environmental standards and advancing the sustainability goals of the global aviation sector.

As Africa’s largest and most experienced airline, Ethiopian Airlines has consistently led the way in sustainability. The airline has undertaken numerous initiatives such as modernizing its fleet, optimizing flight operations, implementing tree planting projects, and launching comprehensive recycling programs to reduce waste and emissions. Incorporating SAF into its operations will further bolster these efforts, substantially lowering the greenhouse gas emissions linked to air travel.
