Kruger Shalati, the renowned train-on-the-bridge experience nestled in the heart of Kruger National Park is a perfect destination for a weekend away with loved ones. Myself and my partner flew from O.R Tambo International Airport straight to the Kruger National Park on a perfect Friday afternoon.
Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Teddy, who took our luggage, and Vusi, who showed us into our rooms after check-in. Vusi’s passion for his job was evident, and we appreciated the warm reception. The views from the lodge was stunning, and we even spotted a crocodile during check-in.
This five-star lodge housed on an immaculately restored train perched on the Selati Bridge overlooking the Sabie River is renowned as a romantic destination. But beyond that it also allows guests to fall in love with the one of South Africa’s most iconic safari destinations. And through its offering of Big Five wildlife encounters, immersive activities and family-friendly amenities, Kruger Shalati is the perfect setting for a memorable getaway with loved ones.
The land-based Bridge House, located adjacent to the bridge in a picturesque garden setting, offers interleading rooms with bunk beds and king-size or twin beds, perfect for families with younger children from the ages of six. While Kruger Shalati, which is housed within the beautifully restored train carriages, caters to families with older children from 12 years.
With Big Five wildlife encounters, immersive activities, and family-friendly amenities, Kruger Shalati is the perfect place for families to reconnect and create lifelong memories. The lodge’s unique setting, converted from a train, was fascinating.
After a refreshing shower and a sunset game drive, we enjoyed dinner served by Loricia and Sbusiso, who were respectful and calm. While savouring exquisite cuisine under the expert guidance of Head Chef Vusi Mbatha. The forage-to-fork concept at Kruger Shalati is testament to the culinary team’s commitment to sustainability, whilst honouring the true essence of each ingredient. The menu is dictated by what is seasonally available from local suppliers, regional farmers and the property’s small, on-site garden that is managed by Philemon Tjia.
Chef Mbatha’s passion for sourcing local produce sees him working closely with local farmers so that the freshest seasonal ingredients find their way onto the plates of his discerning diners. His culinary vision embraces the diversity of South African cuisine by incorporating indigenous ingredients and time-honoured recipes to showcase the unique flavours of the region.
Guests can expect to encounter a variety of intriguing flavours, from the tartness of the marula fruit to venison and smoked crocodile. Mbatha ensures that every guest’s culinary experience is a celebration of the best that South Africa has to offer.
The following day, we embarked on an early morning game drive with our designated guide Berry. We immersed ourselves in the African bush during daily sunrise and sunset throughout our stay. We witnessed elephants in their natural habitat, including a dramatic encounter between two angry bulls. Berry’s expertise and calm demeanor put me at ease, even when we encountered female elephants at close range.
On the evening of our second day stay at Kruger Shalati, we experienced the lodge’s newly completed offering – Trackside Dining, where history and nostalgia meet culinary excellence in a uniquely enchanting setting.
Inspired by the golden era of rail travel, the Trackside Dining is a true blend of heritage and innovation. They have successfully created something different, something that truly honours the legacy of the historic rail journeys.
As you enter this special space, you’ll notice its seamless harmony with the natural surroundings. Thoughtfully crafted using reclaimed railway materials, rustic corrugated iron, and beautiful Leadwood trees, the Trackside Dining really embodies Kruger Shalati’s heritage.
It’s more than just a meal – Trackside Dining stirs the emotions. The space is inviting and instantly engaging. It’s genuinely an amazing place. Guests returning from their game drive adventures find themselves surprised and captivated by this lantern-lit haven, creating unforgettable moments of wonder.
Beyond that, this versatile space will serve as a vibrant cultural hub, offering storytelling, stargazing, live performances, and intimate interactions with our dedicated guides. Each Trackside Dining evening is a chance for genuine connections and cultural enrichment.
We were indeed very impressed by Shalati’s excellence, from the cleanliness, to the food and exceptional service, the team’s dedication and training shows through in every aspect of our stay. Myself and my partner thoroughly enjoyed our time at Shalati and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique five-star luxury lodge in South Africa that offers an unparalleled safari experience exclusive to its guests, and above all, an unforgettable experience that will stick to memories all lifelong.
