With the rand taking a bit of a beating, South African travellers will be doing some serious soul-searching about their overseas holiday plans. However, according to Antoinette Turner, GM Flight Centre South Africa, the travel bug is still alive and kicking – and the appetite for international travel is strong.
“Mauritius and Thailand continue to be popular destinations for budget-savvy South African travellers, but there are some unexpected foreign currencies that our rand can go toe-to-toe with. Choosing a holiday destination isn’t just about the exchange rate. There are plenty of countries where you can get great bang for your buck. Think affordable food, accommodation, and even a few luxuries thrown in. You can also save by heading to countries that don’t require you to get a visa, as the fees can really add up,” says Turner.
Turner explains that while travellers have had to tighten their belts, the tourism industry has also been making adjustments due to global inflation. “The entire travel industry ecosystem has responded by reassessing operating costs, modifying pricing, and implementing technological upgrades to improve efficiency,” she says.
Additionally, there are encouraging indications that the inflationary impact on tourism will lessen. The FCM Consulting Global Quarterly Trend Report Q1 forecasts a decline in high global inflation rates, projecting a decrease from 8.8% in 2022 to 6.6% in 2023 and further down to 4.3% in 2024 – good news for those travelling on the rand.

Iceland
