Looking for Value in Global Travel? Here are Six Destinations where your Rand still Stretches Far

With the rand taking a bit of a beating, South African travellers will be doing some serious soul-searching about their overseas holiday plans. A break from winter (and load shedding) blues is just the pick-me-up you need, right? The question on everyone’s mind is whether they can afford it at all. However, according to Antoinette Turner, GM Flight Centre South Africa, the travel bug is still alive and kicking – and the appetite for international travel is strong.

“Mauritius and Thailand continue to be popular destinations for budget-savvy South African travellers, but there are some unexpected foreign currencies that our rand can go toe-to-toe with. Choosing a holiday destination isn’t just about the exchange rate. There are plenty of countries where you can get great bang for your buck. Think affordable food, accommodation, and even a few luxuries thrown in. You can also save by heading to countries that don’t require you to get a visa, as the fees can really add up,” says Turner.

Turner explains that while travellers have had to tighten their belts, the tourism industry has also been making adjustments due to global inflation. “The entire travel industry ecosystem has responded by reassessing operating costs, modifying pricing, and implementing technological upgrades to improve efficiency,” she says.

Additionally, there are encouraging indications that the inflationary impact on tourism will lessen. The FCM Consulting Global Quarterly Trend Report Q1 forecasts a decline in high global inflation rates, projecting a decrease from 8.8% in 2022 to 6.6% in 2023 and further down to 4.3% in 2024 – good news for those travelling on the rand.

Travel experts recommend the following destinations for South Africans looking for value in foreign travel.

Iceland

Iceland has become the ultimate “it” destination, thanks to its otherworldly landscapes that are just begging to be Instagrammed! With ancient glaciers and rugged fjords, it is a photographer’s dream come true. To get the most bang for your buck, the best time to plan your visit is during the off-season, typically from September to May (except December). The local currency, the krona, has taken a dip in value recently (good news for Saffers), and many of the country’s highlights, like exploring national parks and checking out geyser sites, are free.

How to get there: Travelling from South Africa to Iceland is convenient, with excellent air accessibility. Alternatively, cruise suppliers like NCL include Iceland on their itineraries, providing a unique and scenic journey to explore the stunning Nordic landscapes.

Why go: Marvel at the magical Northern Lights and savour the scrumptious Plokkfiskur, a tasty fish stew. From cosy thermal pools to indulgent spas, Iceland is a haven for self-care and pure bliss.

You must try: Invigorating hot spring soaks, thrilling whale-watching encounters, volcano explorations, and glacier hikes.

What will it cost me there? The estimated price for daily refreshments is cappuccino (R92), bottled water (R55) and for a basic lunch (R462).

Japan

South African tourists in Japan can make their money go a long way and have an amazing time by getting a Japan Rail Pass. This nifty ticket gives access to all JR national trains, including the super cool Shinkansen bullet trains and the convenient Narita Express, and it also comes with great discounts. Whether you opt for a 7, 14, or 21-day pass, you’ll be able to embark on an epic adventure across the country.

How to get there: With fantastic air accessibility and cruise options like NCL, you’ve got choices galore. Fly directly or set sail on a cruise that takes you to the land of sushi and cherry blossoms.

Why go: Cherry blossom season paints the country in stunning shades of pink, while the food scene tantalises with sushi, ramen, and more. Plus, ancient temples offer a serene glimpse into Japan’s incredible culture.

You must try:  Discover the magic of Kabuki shows in Japan, and you’ll be dazzled by the vibrant costumes and captivating performances. Treat your taste buds to the ultimate comfort food: slurping delicious and flavourful ramen. And for an adrenaline rush, hit the slopes for an epic ski or snowboarding adventure – Mount Naeba is currently the most affordable ski area.

What will it cost me there? The estimated price for daily refreshments is cappuccino (R60), bottled water (R15) and for a basic lunch (R130).

While Bali is affordable, many other Indonesian islands provide even more budget-friendly options. Good news for Saffers – you can purchase a visa on arrival for US$35.

Domestic flights are expensive, but Argentina is road trip heaven, perfect for exploring the renowned wine regions along the ‘wine route’ through towns like Salta, Cafayate, and Mendoza.
