Kruger Shalati, the renowned Train on the Bridge experience in the heart of Kruger National Park, is redefining the family safari. This five-star lodge along with its Bridge House Suites overlooking the Sabie River offers an unparalleled setting for multigenerational family adventures.

With Big Five wildlife encounters, immersive activities, and family-friendly amenities, Kruger Shalati is the perfect place for families to reconnect and create lifelong memories together.

“While intergenerational travel has always been popular, we’ve seen a surge in interest since the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Brett Hendricks, COO of Motsamayi Tourism Group, which manages Kruger Shalati. “Families are prioritizing once-in-a-lifetime experiences, saving up to share special moments together on safari.”

Hendricks, who recently enjoyed a multigenerational trip to the luxury lodge himself, reflected on the power of shared experiences:

“When my wife’s family visited from New Zealand, it was their first time experiencing Kruger. My father-in-law—who had never been on a plane or travelled outside of Cape Town—embraced the safari experience with such enthusiasm. It was truly magical. And to top it off, the staff went above and beyond to make my mother-in-law’s 70th birthday celebration unforgettable. It was an experience like no other, shared with our extended family.”

Tailored Accommodation for Families

Families can choose from a variety of accommodation options to suit their needs:

Bridge House – Located adjacent to the bridge in a scenic garden setting, this land-based option offers interleading rooms with bunk beds as well as king-size or twin beds, making it ideal for families with younger children (ages six and up).

Train on the Bridge – The signature Kruger Shalati train carriages cater to families with older children (12 years and up), providing a unique blend of luxury and adventure.

“We’ve designed Kruger Shalati to be an inclusive experience for all ages,” said Hendricks. “From the moment families arrive, we create a welcoming and engaging environment that caters to both children and adults.”

Custom Safari Experiences for All Ages

Understanding the dynamics of multigenerational travel, Kruger Shalati offers private dining areas for families, ensuring an intimate and personalized experience.

“We recognize that traveling with multiple generations can be challenging, so we strive to provide as much flexibility and personalization as possible. We want every family member to feel comfortable and well cared for,” Hendricks added.

For younger guests, Kruger Shalati offers specialized activities to make their safari experience fun and educational:

Children’s Game Drives –

If a group includes four or more children (ages six to 12), Kruger Shalati organizes interactive and educational game drives, just for them. Activities include identifying animal tracks, learning about dung beetles, and engaging with the natural world in a hands-on way.

Exploring Kruger Station –

While parents unwind with an in-room spa treatment or sip cocktails on the deck at Kruger Station Lifestyle Centre, children can embark on their own adventures:

Li’l Gricers Playground –

A fun, free play area for younger children.

Kruger 360 Cinema –

A fully immersive 360-degree experience showcasing wildlife, astronomy, and conservation films every hour from 9 AM to 7 PM daily.

Curiosity Cabinet –

A treasure trove of African plush toys, educational games, books, and safari-themed stationery to spark young imaginations.

Holiday Activities –

During the Easter school holidays this April, children can enjoy Easter-themed activities, adding a touch of Easter magic to their stay.

Creating Lasting Family Bonds

“One of the most beautiful aspects of multigenerational travel is witnessing the shared joy and wonder of a family experiencing something extraordinary together,” said Hendricks. “Whether it’s spotting the Big Five on a game drive, learning about local Shangaan culture on a community tour, or simply enjoying a meal under the African sky, these moments create bonds that last a lifetime.”

This Easter, Kruger Shalati invites families to embark on a journey where luxury meets adventure, and generations come together to celebrate the magic of Africa.
