Zimbabwe’s tourism industry is experiencing a remarkable resurgence, with South African travellers playing a significant role in this growth. Recent data from Zimstat reveals a staggering 83.2% increase in tourist arrivals to Zimbabwe in the first quarter of 2024, compared to the same period last year, with South African travellers showing a notable 35% year-on-year increase.

As the winter season continues, Zimbabwe is shaping up to be a top choice for South African travellers seeking memorable escapes. The combination of natural wonders, wildlife experiences, and improved accessibility is proving to be an irresistible draw for those looking to explore a fantastic short break closer to home.

Antoinette Turner, GM of Flight Centre South Africa notes the growing interest in Zimbabwe packages: “South African families are drawn to the country’s accessibility and the diverse range of experiences available, from iconic natural wonders, such as the Victoria Falls, to bush breaks.”

According to Flight Centre’s Year in Travel 2023 whitepaper, Victoria Falls featured prominently in South African travellers’ plans. The whitepaper states that Victoria Falls was among the top five international destinations for both solo travellers and couples, tying with the UK and Colombo, Sri Lanka for the fifth spot. This data underscores the enduring appeal of Victoria Falls to South African tourists across different travel segments.

The ease of combining multiple attractions within Zimbabwe and neighbouring countries is another factor fuelling the surge in interest.

Kate Powell, General Manager: Sales & Marketing of the Zambezi Queen Collection, highlights the appeal of pairing Victoria Falls with a Chobe River safari. “We encourage South African travellers to make the most of their time in the region by combining these two incredible destinations,” Powell suggests. “Victoria Falls and the embarkation point for our houseboats and Ichingo Chobe River Lodge are just a 60-minute drive apart, allowing travellers to easily combine a Vic Falls adventure with a Chobe River safari.”

Top Five Experiences in Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls Tour: Witness the majestic waterfalls up close, exploring the various viewpoints along the Zambian and Zimbabwean sides. Did you know that Victoria Falls is not just one solo waterfall? In reality, the Victoria Falls are 1700m wide and consist of fivedifferent “falls” – as well as a stunning rainforest, which can be enjoyed walking through the Victoria Falls National Park (entered on the Zimbabwean side).

Victoria Falls Hotel: Dine like a Duchess and enjoy high tea at the historic Victoria Falls Hotel, known for its old-world charm and stunning views.

Sunset cruise on the Zambezi River: Take a relaxing boat ride to observe wildlife and enjoy the beautiful African sunset. A hit for the whole family!

Bungee jump from Victoria Falls Bridge: For thrill-seekers, this 111-metre jump offers an adrenaline rush with spectacular views.

Visit Livingstone Island: During the dry season (the Southern African winter period), take a guided tour to the island on the edge of the falls, where you can even swim in the Instagrammable Devil’s Pool.

While Victoria Falls remains a favourite drawcard, the country’s proximity to South Africa, combined with increased regional flight access and a favourable visa situation, has made it an attractive destination all-round for South African travellers seeking an easy escape.

Five Reasons to Visit Zimbabwe

Visa-free Travel: South African passport holders can enter Zimbabwe without a visa for stays up to 90 days. The KAZA UniVisa facilitates hassle-free travel between Zimbabwe and Zambia, too. SADC passport holders enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to most SADC countries, including Namibia and Botswana (entry points for the Chobe River and another favourite, the Okavango Delta).

Increased Regional Light Access: New routes and increased frequencies make getting to Zimbabwe easier than ever. The nearest airports to Victoria Falls are Victoria Falls (VFA) Airport (18.3 km away), Livingstone (LVI) Airport in Zambia (12 km away), and Kasane (BBK) Airport in Botswana (71.6 km away).

Short Flight Times: With flights from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls taking approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes, Zimbabwe offers an international experience without the long-haul journey. For families with young children, this is an especially appealing aspect.

Value through Package Holidays: While Zimbabwe is priced in US dollars, Flight Centre Experts recommend that South Africans book package holidays, allowing them to budget effectively with the majority of costs covered upfront. Packages to Zimbabwe usually include return flights, airport taxes, return transfers from the airport to your hotel, accommodation and breakfast daily. To have all your holiday costs covered upfront, enquire about all-inclusive packages covering lunch and dinner and, in some cases, even drinks.

Diverse Attractions: Beyond Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe boasts Hwange National Park, Mana Pools National Park, the Great Zimbabwe ruins, and the vibrant culture of cities like Harare and Bulawayo.

Research beforehand which activities you’d like to enjoy and be sure to bring along your passport as SADC passport holders get a reduced rate at some sightseeing attractions, such as the Victoria Falls National Park.
